Predictions
Before reading Grimsdon, I predicted what would happen just by looking at the cover and reading the blurb.
Looking at the cover of Grimsdon, what do you think is happening? What things can you see? Are there any half-hidden or hinted-at objects? What do you think they may indicate?
Looking at the cover of Grimsdon, I think there is a flood in the middle of a city, otherwise normal but the car-like object in the middle of the sky, appearing to have bat-wings hanging off it. There is a half-hidden eye, perhaps belonging to a dragon, hidden beneath the book title, in its refection. The shade of the sky suggests it is night, but just peeking over the horizon is a hint of light, which suggests sunrise, new beginnings. The two children are presumable Isabella and Griffin, of which the blurb mentions as the main characters.
What kind of book do you think it might be? Action? Adventure? Historical?
I think this book will be a mix of fantasy and adventure. I think fantasy because of the flying machine that suddenly turns up, and adventure because of the colours of the book, and the comment after the blub ‘A thrilling novel of friendship, courage and adventure from one of Australia’s best-loved authors.’
What do you think the story is about?
I think the story will be about what Isabella and Griffin find in the flying machine, and perhaps an adventure to save Grimsdon based on what they find.
Describe the characters. What kind of personalities do you think they have?
Isabella- I think she will have a survival instinct that goes beyond all else. Her ‘fighting skills’ will make her tough and unbreakable. Griffin- I think he will be intelligent and gifted, if he is to have the ability to make such fabulous inventions.
Xavier- I think he will be a daredevil unaware of the thin line between bravery and idiocy.
5. From reading the blurb and looking at the cover, write a first paragraph that you think would match the cover.
Isabella turned the gadget over in her hands. It was her best friend Griffin’s newest invention. She looked at the corner, where he was hunched over playing with a red, blue and yellow wire, trying to join them to make them do who knows what. She glanced around the place she, Griffin, and their friends now called home, and had for the past three years. The attic of the luxurious mansion was still as lavish as the average middle-class house in the neighbourhood. But they never dared even try to inhabit the ground levels of any building, or even 2nd or 3rd floor, for the dangers that lurk beneath would never, could never possibly be worth anything. Everyone who had survived The Great Flood of Grimsdon had heard the screams, the pain, the torturous sounds that could only mean one thing; the so called monsters were attacking again- a life was to be lost. This city, Grimsdon, had hardly survived the mass flood three years earlier, and from then on, life had only gotten weirder.
